Lawrence Donald Sand, 88, of Grand Forks, North Dakota, died on August 6, 2012. Mr. Sand was born on May 1, 1924, the son of Helen and Erik Sand. Mr. Sand proudly served in the United States Air Force during World War II as a B-29 tail gunner. Upon returning from the war, Mr. Sand and his new wife, Norma Joyce Gibbs Sand, settled on their Emerado, North Dakota farm. After decades of active farming, Mr. Sand joined his brother Stan, at Sand Steel Building in Emerado. Mr. Sand retired to Grand Forks and later married Eileen Vold Sand. They were married for 20 years, enjoying Las Vegas during the cold winter months. L.D. Sand chose to live his entire life in North Dakota. When asked "Why he would stay where the winters can be so cold?", he would answer with his slow, dry humor, "It keeps the riff raff out." He enjoyed referring to himself as an "old sheep herder" - even though it has been many years since he had raised sheep! He took pride in hard work done well and providing for his family. Mr. Sand is survived by his wife Eileen, his daughters Sondra J. Byrnes of South Bend, Indiana; Linda K. Tatum of Blairsville, Georgia; and Gwen J. Sand of St. Petersburg, Florida; two grandchildren, David Sand-Baylor and Allison Maier; three stepsons from Wisconsin, Craig Schroeder, Mark Schroeder, and Dwight Schroeder; one brother, Stanley Sand; and four sisters, Edith Siewert, Marian Askim, Dorothy Engh and Phylis Croonenbergh.
