Fathy Messiha, 76, Grand Forks died Saturday, August 18, 2012 in Valley Elder Care. Fathy was born in Cairo, Egypt on February 10, 1936. He attended primary school in Cairo, and then attended high school in Assiut, Egypt, participating in the Assiut College-American Mission, where he attained a State High School Certificate, and the Assiut College Diploma. In October of 1954, he attended the University of Graz, Austria, studying German and he joined the Faculty of Pharmacy. In 1957 Fathy attended the University of Basel, Switzerland where he received is diploma in Pharmacy. Then in 1963 he attended the University of Bern, Switzerland where he received a Ph. D in Biochemistry, Dr. in Pharmacy. In 1965, Fathy started his postdoctoral studies at the Medical-Chemical Institute in Bern, Switzerland. He received a permanent resident visa to the United States in 1966, and continued his work at the University of Vermont, College of Medicine, Department of Biochemistry. In 1967, he began working for the Friends of Psychiatric Research, INC. in Maryland. In 1987, Fathy moved to Grand Forks and was a department chair and professor in pharmacology at UND until he retired in 1994. He was a published author, with several papers being published from his hard work and dedication to his studies and profession. At Fathy's request, no formal services will be held.
