Louis Anthony "Louie" Seyler passed away Thursday, October 04, 2012 at the age of 88 at home. Louie was born July 21, 1924 in Little Sioux, Iowa to Vincent and Stella Mae (Williams) Seyler. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in April 1943 in Cheyenne, Wyoming and was honorably discharged in February 1947 from the U.S. Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Florida. He served in WW II as an anti-aircraft gunner and chef on the destroyers, USS Hopewell and USS Shannon. He received the World War II Victory Medal, the American Area Campaign Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Campaign 2 bronze stars and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon 1 star. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Military Order of the Cooties Pup Tent 2, and a member of the American Legion. He was a founding member in 1973 of the Coon n Crockett Muzzleloaders Club of Grand Forks. Louie was an avid archer and won several trophies and medals. On June 24, 1950 he married Rita Arneson in Crookston, MN. The couple made their home in East Grand Forks, MN. Louie worked at the North Dakota State Mill before starting at the Grand Forks Herald in 1951 until his retirement in 1987 as a pressman. After retiring he enjoyed getting together with friends for coffee and in August of 1995 he and Rita took on the role of daycare provider to their infant grandson, Scott Seyler. Scott and Grandpa Louie enjoyed doing many things together. Louie was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Grand Forks. Louie is survived by his wife of 62 years, Rita, daughter Cindy (Fran) Pummer, Colorado Springs, CO; sons Robert, Frederick, CO; Joe (Wanda), East Grand Forks; Paul, Firestone, CO; grandchildren Theresa (Michael) Watson, Colorado Springs, CO; Scott Seyler, East Grand Forks, great grandson Reid Watson, Colorado Springs, CO; brother Joe Seyler, El Paso, TX and half-brothers, Albert Fleuhr, Daly City, CA and Robert Fleuhr, O'Fallon, MO. He was preceded in death by his parents; Vincent and Stella, and siblings, Stella (Bobbie) Dew, Pearl LaBerge, Vincent Seyler, and Mitchell Seyler. Funeral services: Wednesday, October 10, 2012 at 11 a.m. with visitation one hour prior to the service at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Grand Forks.
