Marjorie Ann (Root) Winger, daughter of Henry and Margaret (Freeborg) Root, was born April 16, 1933, in Grand Forks, ND. She passed away from Parkinson complications on Oct 29, 2012. She lived on a farm 2 miles north of Grand Forks and attended a one room rural elementary school and graduated from Grand Forks Central High School in 1951. She attended Mayville State College to earn a 2-yr Standard teaching degree in 1953 and taught for one year at Leeds, ND. She married Milton Winger on Jan. 18, 1954. After his return from army service in 1955 they lived in UND married student housing until 1956 when he joined the UND mathematics department faculty. The family has lived in Grand Forks since then except for a two year period at Ames, IA while Milt completed a PhD degree. Marge completed a BS Ed degree at UND in 1971 and in 1972 began working for the Grand Forks Public School System as a Library Aid and later as a Media Science Secretary. She retired in 1994 and despite health problems, continued to golf, travel and attend sporting, theater and concert events until 2006. While attending college at Mayville, she participated in choir, was a vocalist for a local dance band and also sang for weddings and other events. It was as a dance band vocalist she met her future husband. Marge enjoyed the hobby of sewing the Norse handicraft known as Hardanger. With her husband, she participated in waterfowl hunting and enjoyed traveling around the region to play in couples golf tournaments. She and her husband used to take several 3-day golf trips each summer playing courses in ND, MN and WI. Over the years she rarely missed a UND football, basketball or hockey game and when her grandson, Chris, played hockey for Central High School, she was an avid fan. Later, when her other grandson, Austin, performed as a musician, she enjoyed attending his concerts. She is a lifelong member of the UCC and participated in many church activities over the years including Women's Guild, choir and the diaconate. Her parents, brothers Thomas and Richard, are deceased as are her sisters, Jane (Frank) Crosby, Patricia (William) Schulze and Carol (John) Griffin. She is survived by her husband, a son Thomas (Barbara) Winger, a daughter Pamela (Kim) Erickson and two grandchildren, Christopher Erickson and Austin Winger. She has numerous nieces and nephews. Marjorie A. Winger, 79, of Grand Forks died Monday, October 29, 2012 in Edgewood Vista, East Grand Forks, MN. Funeral services will be Thursday, November 1, 2012 at 2:00 PM in Amundson Funeral Home, 2975 South 42nd st., Grand Forks. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 5 to 7 PM in the funeral home. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Grand Forks.
