Lavonne Bergman, 73, died Wednesday, January 30, 2013 in her home with her family by her side. Lavonne, The daughter of Kermit and Evelyn (Sveen) Hovet was born May 9, 1939 at Deaconess Hospital, and was raised here in Grand Forks, ND. She graduated from Central High School in May of 1957, went on to attend the UND, and graduated Magna Cum Laude with a degree in Mathematics, Accounting, and Statistics, later earning her Master's Degree in Teaching. Lavonne worked as a teacher, accountant, a civilian computer contractor for the Grand Forks Air Force Base, and retired as a statistician for NAPE Testing for the State of North Dakota. While attending the UND she met Orvis Bergman, and they were married at United Lutheran Church on June 30,1961, after which they adopted twin girls, Kristi and Kari, and started their family, and soon found themselves adopted by Mack the Cat, who Lavonne pampered for 20 years to come. Lavonne was a lifelong member of United Lutheran Church, where she was active in assisting with communion and catering to members in the Fellowship Hall. She was a member of the Elks Club playing Bridge weekly, and an active member of the Red Ray Lanes Bowling League. Lavonne loved peace and solitude, finding that in cross-stitching, knitting, gardening, and spending time with her family and friends at the cabin on Upper Red Lake, MN. Her favorite place was at the Lake. She loved surfing, skiing, swimming, and walking the beach with her best friend Judy Nelson. She enjoyed nature and taking teams of kids on her walks through the woods, teaching them about wild flowers and poison ivy. Lavonne was a loving daughter, wife, mother and friend, and was loved by all. Lavonne is survived by her husband, Orvis Bergman, Grand Forks, ND; twin daughters, Kristi Lafferty, Macintosh, MN; Kari Bergman, Grand Forks, ND; and three grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents Kermit and Evelyn. Memorial Service will be held Monday, February 4, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. in United Lutheran Church. Visitiation will be held 1 hour prior to the start of the service in the church.
