Benjamin "Ben" Eugene Hangsleben (74) was born on May 15, 1938, to Thelma (Gunderson) and Wilbert Hangsleben in Grand Forks, North Dakota. He was raised in East Grand Forks, MN. Ben worked hard his whole life with an entrepreneurial spirit: building his own wrecker, working for Concrete Incorporated, Kay Farms, owning his own trucking business, and most recently working for Altendorf Trucking Company. He loved to work on cars, go to races, and hunt. Ben looked forward to trips to Knoxville, IA with his two sons for the National Sprint Car Races. He was a member of the Our Savior's Lutheran Church, American Legion, belonging to the VFW and Eagles clubs in the past. "Big Ben" was a man of many stories and had friends everywhere he went. Ben passed away April 18, 2013 with his family by his side, at his home in East Grand Forks, MN. Ben is survived by his wife of 36 years, Janet Hangsleben (Tsoumpas), and their five children: Tracy Hangsleben, East Grand Forks, MN; Christina (Brian) Jenson, St. Paul, MN; BJ Hangsleben (Hannah Kroke), Bismarck, ND; Angela (Mike) Brockmeyer, East Grand Forks, MN; and Bill Hangsleben, Fargo, ND; six grandchildren: Andrew, Isaiah, Lauren, Sam, Evelyn and Duncan; mother Thelma Schroeder; siblings: Betty Becker, Ed Schroeder, Carolyn Norman, Lawrence Schroeder, and Darlene Schroeder. He is also survived by his daughters Kristin Heffern, Arizona, and Tamara Hangsleben, Oregon. He was preceded in death by his father Wilbert Hangsleben, stepfather Carl Schroeder, sisters Carol Schroeder and Shirley Becker. **In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family. FUNERAL SERVICES: 3:00 p.m. Sunday, April 21, at Bethany Lutheran Church 10321 State Highway 220 NW in East Grand Forks, MN. VISITATION: 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service on Saturday, April 20, at Amundson Funeral Home 2975 S. 42nd St. in Grand Forks. Visitation will continue the hour prior to the service at the church.
