Lois Maier

Lois Irene (Kuster) Maier, 75, Grand Forks, ND, passed away at home on Saturday, June 15, 2013. Lois Kuster was born in Grand Forks in 1938. She was raised on her parent's farm, which at the time was just west of the city. She graduated from Central High School in 1956. One year later she married Bud Maier and they built their home and farm of a mile away from her parents. Bud and Lois adopted two children, Dan in 1961 and Kelly in 1963. While Bud farmed, Lois worked as an accountant in town. She taught herself accounting, working initially at a bus company, followed by The Dakota Hotel, The Veterans Club and then lastly and the longest at United Hospital. At United Hospital, she was promoted to Director of Accounting and held that position until 1996 when she was promoted again, this time to Controller. She held that position until her retirement in 1999. She was deeply involved in the Hospital Financial Management Association. She served as National President and was awarded a Chapter Lifetime Membership for her invaluable service and dedication to the Association. Lois loved music. In high school, she sang soprano and played piano under Dwight Sherwood. She would continue playing piano for the rest of her life. Among the many places she played were Altru Hospital, United Lutheran Church and 4000 Valley Memorial. Lois enjoyed many summers at Island Lake near Lengby, MN and Long Lake near Vergas, MN. Lois is survived by her children, Dan (Deb) Maier and Kelly (Robb) Wock; five grandchildren, Brandon (fiancé, Stephanie Graham), Cody, Brett, Caitlin and Sierra; and a great granddaughter, Cheyenne Maier. Lois was preceded in death by her husband, Bud Maier; an infant daughter, Kimberly Raye Maier; her parents, Fred and Viola Kuster; and a brother, Raymond Kuster. Memorial Services will be 11:00 AM Wednesday, June 19, 2013 in United Lutheran Church, 324 Chestnut St, Grand Forks. Visitation will be for the hour before the service in the church. Burial will be in Memorial Park South Cemetery of Grand Forks.
