Lillian Jean (Smith) Buck, 97, died Sunday evening at Altru hospital in Grand Forks. She was born to John and Clara (Haugland) Smith on July 31, 1916, in Grand Forks. When Lillian was 2 years older, her mother died in the 1918 flu epidemic. She was then raised by her Grandma Haugland, spending summers on the Smith farm in Walle township with her grandma, dad, and uncles. Lillian graduated from Grand Forks Central High School in 1934, where she met Doris Buck, who later introduced her to her future husband, Theodore (Ted) Buck, Doris' brother. They were married July 27, 1937, and moved to Manvel, North Dakota, where they raised their family and farmed. Lillian is survived by her children Maynard (Libby), Manvel; Beverly (Duane Obright), Minneapolis; Dennis (Carol), Grand Forks; Brian (Wanda), St. Cloud. Lillian is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, children Ted Jr. and Nancy, and sister Donna Johnson. She is survived by other siblings in the United States. As they farmed, Lillian belonged to the Congregational church, taught Sunday school and was Sunday school superintendent. Later she belonged to Trinity Lutheran church where she was also active in Sunday school and ladies aide. She also was a charter member of the LFT (Levant, Ferry, Turtle River) Homemakers club. She had always wanted to be a nurse, but could not afford tuition during the dirty 30's. When her husband, Ted, died in 1973, she took a nurse's aide course and went to work at United Hospital in Grand Forks. She thoroughly enjoyed this work. In 2005, she moved to Parkwood in Grand Forks, ending 68 years "on the farm." The family would like to thank all the staff at Parkwood for her many happy years there. She enjoyed the job of greeting newcomers to Parkwood and making new friends. We would also like to thank the staff of Altru Hospital for helping her passing to be peaceful.
