Helen Sorum

Helen M. Sorum, 87, Grand Forks, ND died Tuesday, November 5, 2013 in Valley Memorial Home Eldercare, Grand Forks. Helen Mellstrom was born December 17, 1925 in Salol, MN the daughter of Jonas and Anne (Kveen) Mellstrom. She was raised and educated in the Salol area. She began working for a bank in Warroad, MN, then lived in Seattle and Chicago before returning to Salol. She moved to Grand Forks where she worked for State Farm Insurance and Implement Dealers Insurance, then for many years as a Civil Service Payroll Officer at the Grand Forks Air Force Base. Helen was active in United Lutheran Church in Grand Forks and visited shut-ins when she was able. Helen was also a great cook and baker who always had cake cookies and bars for others. Helen married Ronald Sorum on June 3, 1951 in Salol, MN. He passed away April 22, 1982. Survivors include her daughter, Karen (Randy) Waltz, Brookings, SD; son, Randy Sorum, Grand Forks; grandson, Hank Waldron, Grand Forks; great grandchildren, Wyatt Waldron and Claire Waldron, Grand Forks; brother, Ed (Jean) Mellstrom, Mankato, MN. Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald; her parents; and by brothers, Stanley Erling and Levern. Memorial Services will be 7:00 PM Sunday, November 10, 2013 in Amundson Funeral Home of Grand Forks. Visitation will be Sunday from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM in the funeral home. Burial will be in Memorial Park South Cemetery of Grand Forks, ND.
