Gary Thomas Hellman

Gary T. Hellman, 65, of Grand Forks, died Wednesday, December 11, 2013, at the VA Medical Center in Fargo, ND. Gary was born July 12, 1948 in Elgin, ND, the son of Thomas F. & Anna Maria (Meier) Hellman. Gary grew up in Glen Ullin, ND and where he graduated from High School and later attended college at Wahpeton School of Science. He served 2 years in the US Navy during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged. Following his military service he moved to Bismarck where he met Donna Hummel. They were married on June 2, 1973 in St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Mandan. Gary and Donna lived in the Black Hills, SD, Walhalla, and Pembina before moving to Grand Forks in 2007. Donna died in April 13, 2013. Gary enjoyed woodworking, gardening and spending time with his grandchildren. Gary is survived by his daughter, Candace (James) Thomas, Walhalla, ND; grandsons, Zach, Tyler and Kyle; mother, Anna Maria Hellman; sisters, Karen Hellman, Bismarck, ND, Madonna Roth, Elgin, ND, Bernadette (Ron) Braun, Northwood, ND; brothers, Thomas Hellman, Glen Ulen, ND, Robert (Barbara) Hellman, Lincoln, ND; and sister-in-law, Delores Hummel, Fargo, ND He was preceded in death by his father, and wife, Donna. **In lieu of flowers, memorial may be directed to the VA Medical Center in Fargo. Memorial service will be held Monday, December 16, 2013 at 4:00 p.m. in Amundson Funeral Home, 2975 S. 42nd St Grand Forks, ND. Visitation will be held 1 hour prior to the start of the service.
