Carol Jarman

Carol Jane Jarman, 98, a long-time resident of Larimore and Grand Forks, ND died on January 15, 2014 in Wisconsin, in the company of her children and other family and friends. Born on January 5, 1916 at the family home near Kensal, ND, Carol was the ninth child of Danish immigrants, Jens and Petrea (Hoyer) Pedersen. She was baptized and confirmed in the Danish Lutheran Church. Carol grew up on the family's homestead farm in rural Kensal. A creative child, she wrote poetry and also being athletic, played basketball for Kensal High School, graduating in 1932. In 1936, while working as a bookkeeper at JC Penney in Carrington, ND, Carol met her future husband, a high school coach and history teacher, Lloyd Jarman of Larimore, ND. After he joined the US Army during WWII, Carol completed a nurses training course in Fargo. Carol and Lloyd eloped to Crookston, MN where they were married on December 31, 1942. After the war, Carol and Lloyd moved to the Jarman family farm near Larimore in 1945. After farming 15 years, Lloyd returned to teaching in the late 1950's, and they built a house in Larimore. During these years, Carol and Lloyd raised their son and two daughters, John, Judy and Jane. In addition to her family and farm responsibilities, Carol also was a bookkeeper for Jarman and Shide Implement in Larimore for several years. Carol was active in the Methodist Church, 4-H, and other community groups. She also was involved in developing the Larimore Golf Club, where she was a charter member. In 1963, Carol and Lloyd move to Grand Forks, where he taught at UND. Carol was active in UND Faculty Wives, PEO and Methodist church organizations. She also worked in the UND Registrar's Office and enjoyed auditing university courses. Carol and Lloyd moved back to a family home in Larimore in 1974 after his retirement. They enjoyed travel, gardening, golf, family and friends. Lloyd died in 1991. After Lloyd's death, Carol continued to travel to visit her family in other states. During her many years in Larimore, she remained active in the United Methodist Church. Carol participated in United Methodist Women, Homemakers, Garden Club, and Tuesday Club. A creative woman, Carol loved to express herself in writing poetry and prose, painting, special family projects and gardening. A favorite theme for her artistic expression was the butterfly, as a symbol of change and new life. A passionate golfer, Carol enjoyed countless rounds with family and friends, playing regularly until she was 85. Carol's deepest affection was always for her family, and she cherished time with her children, grandchildren and greatgrandchldren. In 2005 Carol sold her house in Larimore and became a resident at Parkwood Place in Grand Forks. In late 2008, she moved to a care center with beautiful gardens in Wisconsin, near her daughter, Judy. Carol was enjoyed by all who knew her. She will be deeply missed by her children, John Jarman (Carol Windels) of Alexandria, MN; Judy (Lowell) Elhard of New Berlin, WI; and Jane (Ronald) Solberg of Lewiston, NY. Carol was especially loved by her seven grandchildren, Paul (Tamara) Jarman; Chad Jarman; Suzanne (Mark) Uggerud; Kathryn (Josh) Coe; Christopher (Kateri) Solberg; William (Patricia) Solberg; and Heather (Joel) Holl. Carol treasured her 11 greatgrandchildren, Cole, Max and Alex Jarman; Luke and Hope Uggerud; Audrey Solberg; Elizabeth and Victoria Solberg, Collin, Keira and Eleanor Murray. Carol is also fondly remembered by numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Carol was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lloyd; brothers Gorm, Ray, Einar, Beyer and sisters Margariethe, Johanna, Nell, and Margaret. Funeral Services will be held at the Larimore United Methodist Church (Larimore, ND) at 2:00 pm on Saturday, January 25. 2014 Visitation will be at the church from 1:00 am to 2:00 pm prior to the service. Memorials may be designated for the Larimore United Methodist Church or Larimore Senior Center.
