O.A. Alf Strinden

March 21, 1917 — March 16, 2014

O.A. (Alf) Strinden passed away on March 16, at the age of 96. He lived a life of caring, meaning, and accomplishment, always with a strong dedication to family, community, and nation. Alf was born in Litchville, ND and was a graduate of Litchville High School and N.D.S.U. He enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard and graduated from the Coast Guard Academy and later attended the Naval War College, Annapolis, MD. During World War II, he served in the Navy in the Pacific Theater. After 34 years of active and reserve duty, he retired with the rank of Commander. His business and professional career included the Strinden Hardware in Litchville and in 1969 the Strinden Hardware in Grand Forks, ND. He served as Chairman of the Board of the Our Own Hardware Company, Minneapolis, MN. An active volunteer, Alf served as a citizen member of the statutory committee for the elimination of the personal property tax. In Litchville he served on the school board, president of the commercial club and treasurer of First Lutheran Church. He was a member of the V.F.W., Lions, Elks, and Calvary Lutheran Church in Grand Forks, ND. In retirement he was dedicated to assisting others as a member of S.C.O.R.E., The Service Corps of Retired Executives. He is survived by Cleone, his wife of 69 years, son Bruce (Lauren), Mandan and daughter Barbara Byars, Pahrump, NV, grandsons, Peter (Darci) Strinden, Matthew (Jaci) Strinden, and David (Emily) Byars and 7 great-grandchildren. Brothers Dean (Catheleen), Earl (Janice), and David (Ella), and sister-in-law, Mavis Strinden He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, lone and Marcelle and brothers, Keith and Theron. **Memorials may be directed to: Calvary Lutheran, First Lutheran of Litchville or a charity of one's choosing. INTERMENT: Later Spring at the Litchville Cemetery in Litchville, ND.
