Joyce Eulalie Miller

Joyce Eulalie Miller, age 90 of Grand Forks, ND passed away Saturday, March 22, 2014 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks. Joyce was the daughter of the late Leonard ( L.B.) and Ella ( Brende) Torkelson. She was born the morning of July 23rd, 1923 at her Grandma (Emma) Brende's home in Grafton, ND. She was baptized and confirmed at South Trinity Lutheran Church and was a lifetime member of the congregation congregation until its closing in 2008. She was currently a member of Calvary Lutheran Church in Grand Forks. She attended school at District # 2, a one room school located one half mile north of her parent's home. Joyce graduated from Grafton High School in 1941. She then enrolled in a two year program at Mayville Teachers College to receive a "Standard Teaching Diploma". She was an elementary instructor at Forest River, Cavalier and Chase School at Grafton. Joyce and her long-time friend Sy Miller of Forest River were united in marriage on June 15, 1958 in the rectory of St. John's Catholic Church in Ardoch. The couple made their home in Forest River where they owned and operated the Miller Oil Company. They raised their son, Steve, in Forest River. The couple retired in 1987 but continued to live in Forest River until the summer of 2006 at which time they moved to Briarwood in Grand Forks. They celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary June 15, 2008. Sy passed away September 16, 2010. Joyce's life reflected the love, faith and strength of her Lord Jesus Christ. She had an enduring love for, and dedication to her parents, her husband Sy and family members. The loving memories of Sy and Joyce will live on in our hearts. In addition to her lifelong membership at South Trinity Lutheran Church, she was a member of the Forest River Auxiliary, the Grand Forks Senior Center and Bethesda Society. Joyce is survived by her son Steve, daughter-in-law Jill, grandsons Jeffery and Jonathan of Grand Rapids, Michigan, nephew Craig ( Molly ) Hollenbeck of Minneapolis, MN. Survivors also include sisters-in-law Frances Kobe and Dorothy (Raymond) Bohlman, brothers-in-law Jack Miller and Joe (Loretta) Miller all of Grand Forks and numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by a group of loving cousins who held yearly reunions. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Sy, her sister Jean Hollenbeck, brothers-in-law Robert Hollenbeck and Ervin Kobe, and several cousins. Visitation will be held at the Amundson Funeral Home 2975 S. 42nd St. in Grand Forks from 5-7p.m. on Wednesday, March 26th, with a prayer service at 6:30p.m. Visitation will continue the hour prior to the funeral service at the church. Funeral service will be held at Calvary Lutheran Church 1405 9th St. S. in Grand Forks on Thursday, March 27th, at 11a.m. A luncheon will follow at the church. Interment will be in the South Trinity Cemetery in rural Grafton in later spring. **In lieu of floral tributes the family requests memorial offerings to the South Trinity Cemetery Association, 502 Hilltop Drive, Park River, ND, 58270 Blessed be the memory of Joyce Miller.
