James Bernard Carlson, 89, of Laporte, MN died suddenly with his wife, Phyllis May Carlson, as the result of a motor vehicle accident on Tuesday, June 10, 2014. James was born March 8, 1925 in Oakes, ND to Frederick and Christina (Monson) Carlson. He grew up in Oakes, ND and attended the University of North Dakota. On November 26, 1946, he married Phyllis May Furan in Oakes, ND. He served as a Navy Seabee with the Construction Battalion in the South Pacific during World War II. He was a Certified Public Accountant and a partner with Brady Martz in Grand Forks, ND. James had many hobbies and special interests. He was a private pilot and loved taking family trips in his plane. He enjoyed Arizona mountain climbing, rock hunting, running, snowmobiling, gatherings at the family cabin on Kabekona Lake, rollerblading, and self-taught computer proficiency. He liked crossword puzzles, Wheel of Fortune, taking care of his yards, taking care of Phyllis, giving her jewelry, and playing Solitaire on the computer. He is fondly remembered by his children as strictly a meat and potatoes guy who kept a crew cut since the war, was always humming under his breath, could fix anything at all, and was very honest and loyal.
