Lila Bernice Sorensen

November 16, 1923 — July 30, 2014

Lila Bernice Sorensen (Berg), 90, of Grand Forks, passed peacefully at home with the comfort of family by her side. Lila was born November 16th, 1923 in Williston, ND to John G. Berg & Clara Berg (Johnson). Lila lived in Williams County where her father homesteaded until 1926, when at the young age of 3, Lila's parents decided to move the family to Brenna Township/Grand Forks County. Lila attended Brenna Country School #27, grades 1-8. In 1938, Lila and her cousin, June Block would move to Grand Forks during the school year and rent a room on N. 6th St. in Grand Forks to attend Central High School. This continued through graduation, June of 1942. Lila also married her high school sweetheart, Willard "Willy" Sorensen on Nov. 20th, that same year. The Wedding Ceremony was held in St. Peters Lutheran Church in Medford, OR, which is where Willard was stationed in the army after being drafted. After graduating Central High School, Lila attended Aaker's School of Business and was placed in a position with Implement Dealers Mutual Insurance, doing secretarial work until moving to Oregon, which was where Willard served in the Army Infantry division, something of which Lila was very proud of. After Willard's departure from the Army, Lila and Willard moved back to Grand Forks in 1949. Willard then worked for Grand Forks Central High School doing maintenance and carpentry at the school. Lila then went back to Implement Mutual Insurance as a secretary. Lila & Willard bought a home at 1813 N. 4th St., Grand Forks, ND 58203 - facing Riverside Park. Lila very much enjoyed the view from their picture window. Lila changed careers in 1963, going to work at the Grand Forks County Courthouse, as an administrative assistant to her best friend Dorothy Ramberg, Supervisor of the Juvenile Court System, until 1976. Lila then worked for the Sheriff's Department as a 911 dispatcher until 1984 when she retired. Shortly after Willard's passing in 1997, Lila moved from their home, to St. Anne's Guest Home, until 2009. Lila then moved to Briarwood Apartments in South Grand Forks. March of 2014, Lila moved back to St. Anne's, where she remained for the final months of her life. Lila enjoyed going out to eat, getting her hair done and being pampered on Thursdays, Sunday morning breakfasts at the Ramada with family, watching small children be, rides in the country and the Hatton Friday Night Fish Fry dinners with her cousin Neal Sorbo. Lila was survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her Husband Willard Sorensen, Parents; John G. Berg & Clara Berg (Johnson), Brothers; Vernon Berg, Milton Berg and Glenn Berg. Special Thanks to Lisa Aarhus, St. Anne's Guest Home, Altru Hospice & Comfort Keepers for your compassion, kindness and care. **Memorial contributions may be directed to the family and will be given to Altru Hospice and St. Anne's Guest Home in Grand Forks.
