Ferne Berg

Ferne M. Berg, 81, Grand Forks, ND died Sunday, August 10, 2014 in Vibra Hospital of Fargo, ND. Ferne M. Hultgren was born May 2, 1933 to David and Lillian (Johnson) Hultgren on a farm 7 miles east of Kennedy, MN. She graduated from Kennedy High School and then moved to Grand Forks where she graduated from Aaker's Business College. It was there she met Merland "Red" Berg. They were married on September 5, 1952 in Kennedy, MN and spent the next 61 years together before her beloved Red passed away March 25, 2014. They were blessed with three beautiful children, Patti, Jerry and Greg. Ferne was a secretary for six years at Roosevelt Elementary School in Grand Forks where her children attended school. She later was employed at Red River National Bank which later became First Bank. Ferne retired from the bank as a loan officer in 1988 after 20 years of employment. Ferne spent most of her life in Grand Forks and was involved in many organizations. She was a longtime member and past president of the American Legion Auxiliary. In 2009, she received the unit Member of The Year Award and in 2010, received the Presidential Volunteer Service Award. She was a longtime member of Calvary Lutheran Church where she participated over the years in choir, the church circle and currently enjoyed her weekly coffee group. Ferne loved time with her family and especially with her grandchildren at the lake and during holidays, spoiling them with many treats and goodies. Ferne is survived by her daughter, Patti (David) Wicklein, Plymouth, MN; sons, Jerry (Rebecca) of Arlington, MN, and Gregory (Teresa) of Grand Forks; Grandchildren, Alexandra Abbenhaus, Christopher, Jordan, Ian and Caitlin Berg; sister, LeeVila Wallsten, Apple Valley, MN; and a brother, Dale (Ettie) Hultgren, Kennedy, MN. and many nieces and nephews. Ferne was preceded in death by her husband, Merland "Red" Berg, her parents, and by a sister, Adele Hultgren. Funeral Services will be 2:00 PM Saturday, August 16, 2014 in Calvary Lutheran Church of Grand Forks, ND. Visitation will be for the hour before the service in the church. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery of Grand Forks.
