Lloyd Rath

Lloyd Ervin Rath, 73, Grand Forks, North Dakota, died on August 29, 2014 at Altru in Grand Forks. Lloyd was born November 16, 1940 in Jamestown, ND to George and Grace Rath. Lloyd grew up and lived in Jamestown until he joined the Army at the age of 17. Over a 20 year Army career, he served in numerous duty stations including Alaska, New Jersey, Kentucky, Hawaii, and two overseas tours in Viet Nam and one in Thailand. While stationed in Hawaii, Lloyd met Shirley Hirneisen. They were married September 22, 1963 in her home state of Pennsylvania. He retired from the Army in 1977 as a First Sergeant and then moved with Shirley and their three children to Grand Forks to continue his education at the University of North Dakota. After receiving a bachelor's degree in Social Work from UND, he worked for 20 years with Tri-County Community Corrections in Crookston and retired in 1997. He then began work as a coordinator for domestic violence offender treatment programs at the Community Violence Intervention Center in Grand Forks. He retired in 2013 after 16 years of service with CVIC. Lloyd and Shirley were foster parents to many children over the years. Lloyd enjoyed staying busy and active. He enjoyed his men's Bible study and being active at his church. He and Shirley enjoyed traveling and volunteering at Medora. He was a devoted Sioux Hockey fan. He loved and enjoyed his grandchildren, attending as many of their events and concerts as he was able. Survivors include children, Michael (Susan) Rath, Sacramento, CA, Mark (Rebecca) Rath, Grand Forks, Markay (Warren) Roehl, Grand Forks, and daughter-in-law, Alicia Rath, Grand Forks and 11 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley, parents, sisters, Amy, Carol and Fern and by a grandson, Patrick. Funeral Services will be 10:30 AM Tuesday in Grace Baptist Church of Grand Forks. Visitation will be Monday from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM with a 7:00 PM Prayer Service in Amundson Funeral Home of Grand Forks. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery of Grand Forks. Military honors will be conducted by the North Dakota Army National Guard, The American Legion and the Veterans Of Foreign Wars. A register book may be signed at www.amundsonfuneralhome.com
