Shirley Ruckreigle passed away Friday, September 26, 2014 at the Pembina County Memorial Hospital after a brief respiratory illness. She had been residing at Wedgewood Manor in Cavalier, ND. Shirley Ann Janette Phelps was born to Royal Dakota and Florence Minnie (Seufert) Phelps on a farm near Milton, ND February 13, 1936. The family later moved to Hoople, ND. In her teens she moved to Grand Forks which remained her primary residence. In 1956, she had her first child and later married Arnt Syverson. They had a second child in 1963. The couple later divorced. Shirley married Frances (Frank) Ruckreigle in 1981. They made Grand Forks their home until they retired to Pine Lake near Gonvick, MN. Later in her life she developed A.D. and resided in care facilities in the area. Shirley did not finish school, but completed her GED later in life. She also completed training in hair design and cosmetology. She worked at various times of her life as a cook, caregiver and waitress. Besides spending time with her family, Shirley enjoyed life at Pine Lake, quilting, music, gardening and she loved to dance. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Frank; brothers, Vernon (Loraine), Merl (Joella), Glenn, Gary (Kathy), and Michael; and by sisters, Patricia and Marjorie (Ralph/Charlie) Sanders Krom. She is survived by daughters, Theresa (Doug) Patrick, Laurel, DE and Kathryn (Andrew) Eggen, Sitka, AK; granddaughter, Sarah (Chad) Dennis; great granddaughter, Reagan, Haslet, TX; grandson, Tyler Eggen, Anchorage, AK; brothers, Wesley (Jolene), Scott (Jan), Grafton, ND, Cecil (Jeanine), Greely, CO; sisters, Myra, Jacksonville, FL, Joan (Glen) Grenwell, Babbitt, MN, Judy (Mark) Wilson, Jacksonville, FL and Sheila (Charles) Lietz, Larimore, ND as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by stepchildren, Jean Sanborn, Steven Sanborn, John, Paul, Glenn Ruckreigle and Karen Sinkevich as well as their spouses and children. Funeral Services will be 11:00 AM Monday in Amundson Funeral Home of Grand Forks, ND. Visitation will be for the hour before the service in the funeral home. Burial will be 3:00 PM Monday in the Samhold Cemetery of Gonvick, MN In Lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in her name to the Alzheimer's Association.
