Violet Nygaard

Violet G. Nygaard, 82, Portland, ND and formerly of Grand Forks, ND died Friday, December 12, 2014 in Sanford Medical Center of Fargo, ND. Violet Grace Nienas was born June 10, 1932 in Pleasant View Township, ND the daughter of Frank and Dora (Holweger) Nienas. She was raised and educated near Emerado, ND and was on the school basketball team. Violet married Kenneth Nygaard on October 15, 1950 at Pleasant View Church. They lived and farmed west of Thompson, ND and later near Emerado. They moved to Grand Forks in the fall of 1968 and lived there until their home was destroyed by the 1997 flood. In January of 1998 they moved to Portland, ND. Violet enjoyed embroidery, knitting, flowers (especially purple ones), soap operas, The Price Is Right, and attending ladies Circle Group at church. Survivors include her husband, Kenneth, Portland, ND; children, Sharon (Bill) Hoffman, Hatton, ND, Susie Ernest, Fargo, ND, Steven (Beverly) Nygaard, Hatton, ND, Sandy (Bill) Montgomery, Fargo, ND, Sheila (Chip Cornell) Nygaard, Grand Forks, Silvan (Shari) Nygaard, Euclid, MN and Shelly Nygaard, Portland, ND; 13 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; brother, Lester (Ruth) Nienas, Grand Forks. Violet was preceded in death by her parents, and by a grandson, Steven Nygaard, Jr. Funeral Services will be 11:00 AM Wednesday, December 17, 2014 in Zion United Methodist Church of Grand Forks. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM with a 7:00 PM Prayer Service in Amundson Funeral Home of Grand Forks. Visitation will continue for the hour before the service in the church. Burial will be in Stjordalen Cemetery near Reynolds, ND.
