Howard Berg

Howard A. Berg, 92, Grand Forks, died peacefully on Tuesday, February 10, 2015 at home. Howard Arnold Berg was born to Nels and Gena (Floan) Berg on May 15, 1922 at Rural Fertile, Minnesota. He was baptized and confirmed in Varness Lutheran Church of Fertile. Howard attended school in the Fertile area and graduated from the NW Minnesota Agriculture School at Crookston, Minnesota. He worked on the family farm until 1950 when he became employed by Farm Credit Service in Crookston, working in Crookston, Grand Forks, and Fargo. Howard Berg and Verna Hanson were married on May 26, 1951 in Madison, Minnesota. Howard joined the North Dakota Mill and Elevator in 1960 and retired in 1990 as General Sales Manager. He was active in many farm and community organizations, the Grand Forks and North Dakota Jaycees; North Dakota Stockmen's Association and served as Chairman of the local United Way Board, and a 30 yearmember of the Grand Forks Elks Club. Howard was an active member of Calvary Lutheran Church for more than 50 years, a past member of the church council, President of the Congregation, Chairman of the Stewardship Committee and also served on the Call Committee. He was an avid golfer and UND sports fan. He took great pride in his family and attending their many activities and events. Howard is survived by daughters, Kathy (Tom) Quirk, Mentor, MN , and Karen (Bryan Dodd) Herdegen, Eugene, OR; grandchildren, Kelly (Travis) Halvorson, Ryan Herdegen, Erik (Sara) Quirk, Leah (Tom Rixen) Herdegen, Tyler (Lynde) Quirk, Tara Herdegen, Matt (Mici Braton) Quirk, Nikki Herdegen; great-grandchildren, Evelyn and Spencer Drengson, Cassidy and Luke Halvorson, Makenzie and Easton Quirk, Kierra Quirk, Collin Quirk; a sister Olga Ofstedal, Peoria, AZ. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Verna, who died October 11, 2010, great-grandson, Declan Quirk, a brother, Milton Berg, and sisters, Nellie Bradshaw and Connie Eppersom. Funeral Services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 14, 2015 in Calvary Lutheran Church, 1405 S. 9th St., Grand Forks. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. Prayer Service Friday, February 13, 2015 in Amundson Funeral Home, 2975 S. 42nd St., Grand Forks and one hour prior to the service in the church.
