Oliver R. Cantu, Jr.

Oliver R. Cantu, Jr., 72, Lankin, North Dakota passed away with his children by his side on Thursday, June 11, 2015 in Altru Hospital, Grand Forks. Oliver Rosales Cantu, Jr. was born to Oliver Benevides Cantu, Sr., and Josephine (Rosales) Cantu on June 16, 1943 at Cotulla, Texas where he was raised and educated. He served in the US Army in Vietnam. Oliver married Janice Machovsky on July 21, 1978 at Inkster Presbyterian Church. They lived in Texas until moving to Lankin in 2005. Oliver was a self-employed maintenance mechanic and also worked at the Kinney Farm and for BNSF Railroad. Oliver enjoyed fishing, gardening, yardwork, and most importantly his family. He was a sports fanatic and loved the Dallas Cowboys and Texas Rangers. Oliver is survived by his children, Tammy Sandbothe (Don), Grand Forks, Jerry Barta (Theresa), Little Elm, TX, Ron Barta (Shay), Manheim, Germany, Sheila Swartz (Mike Sevigny), Lankin, ND, Michelle Cantu,; grandchildren, Tony Skavlem, Tyler Skavlem, Jody Lopez, Lindsay and Justin Chimbur, Ian Skavlem, Justin Swartz, Dalton Swartz, Brody Swartz, Isaac Barta, Cheyenne Barta, Isaiah Barta, Jeremiah Barta, Michael Barta; great-grandchildren, Grayson Skavlem and Ellie Chimbur; brothers, Eddie Cantu (Olga), Cotulla, TX, Morris Cantu, The Colony, TX; sisters, Judy (Raul) Campos, The Colony, TX, Penny Williams, The Colony, TX. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Janice who died on August 14, 2013, a daughter, Kimberly Lynn Barta, a grandson, Brandon Barta, son-in-law, Kent Skavlem, sisters, Mary Louisa Diaz, and Diana Hernandez, step-father, George Whiteman. Funeral Services will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, June 15, 2015 in Forest River Community Church, Forest River, ND. Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral in the church. Interment and military honors will be in Inkster Cemetery.
