Thelma Hovet, formerly of Buxton, ND and Valley Eldercare in Grand Forks, died Wednesday, December 2, 2015, one month and one day short of her 97th birthday. Thelma, daughter of Charles R. Smith and Caroline Sanders Smith, was born January 3, 1919 in Reynolds, ND. She attended school in Buxton and the State School of Science at Wahpeton, ND. Thelma married Gerald Hovet on March 1, 1941 in Inglewood, Ca. The couple returned to Buxton in 1942. Thelma worked as a bookkeeper, but many will remember her as the Postmaster in Buxton for over 18 years. She was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, the Ladies Aide and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for 58 years. She enjoyed traveling, card playing and visiting. Thelma is survived by two sons: Ron (Ruth) of N. Fort Myers, FL and Jerry (Sonia) of Mesa, AZ; three granddaughters: Christine Hovet of Stoughton, WI, Tammie Jo Burris (Steve) of Grand Forks, and Michele (Jeff) Urlaub of Cavalier; two grandsons: R. Scott Hovet (Kelly) of Gypsum, CO, G. Michel (Jami) Hovet of Mesa, AZ; brother-in-law Wally Nygaard of Buxton plus nine great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Thelma was preceded in death by her parents, husband Gerald of almost 50 years (died April 1990), sister Leona Asheim Myers, brother Claude Smith and great granddaughter, Katie Burris. Funeral services will be Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2015 at 11:00 AM in Immanuel Lutheran Church, Buxton, ND. Visitation will be for the hour before the service in the church. Interment will be in the Hyllestad Cemetery, rural Buxton.
