Donna M. Onneland, 83, Grand Forks, ND died Monday, December 28, 2015 in Valley Memorial Home Woodside Village. Donna Marie Braaten was born October 25, 1932 in Mekinock, ND, the daughter of Peter and Nellie (Fossum) Braaten. She was raised and educated in Manvel, ND. In her late teens and early twenties, Donna worked as a waitress in Fargo and Grand Forks, ND. Donna and her children lived in Grand Forks until 1976 when they moved to East Grand Forks. Donna worked as head cook at Sacred Heart School, while also working part time for the catering department at the University of North Dakota. She spent 28 years working in food service at UND before retiring in 2009. Donna was most happy when she was spending time with her family. Donna also enjoyed playing cards, Yahtzee, Bingo, doing crossword puzzles, and occasional trips to the casino. She was an avid UND Football and Hockey fan, and got to know many of the players through her work at UND. Donna is survived by her children, Jack (Jacqueline) Knopp, Grand Fork, Annette (Jim) Spalla, Waubun, MN, Diana Knopp, Grand Forks and Kim (Bret) Van Sant, Alvarado, MN; 10 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; siblings, Jim Braaten, Thompson, ND, Randina (Tom) Gerbereux, Grand Forks, and Gary Braaten, Douglas, WY. Donna was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Dorothy Ann;parents; brothers, Norman, Wallace and Peter Jr.; and sisters, Lorraine and LaVerne. Funeral Services will be 2:00 Saturday, January 2, 2016 in the Havig-Heen Auditorium Chapel of 4000 Valley Square, Grand Forks. Visitation will be for the hour before the service in the chapel. Burial will be in the spring at Memorial Park Cemetery of Grand Forks.
