Joseph L. Tupa

Joseph “Leo” L. Tupa, 83, died Saturday, February 13, 2016, at his home in Grand Forks, ND. Leo was born at home and delivered by a midwife April 19, 1932, in Regent, ND, to Joseph & Eva (Wagondorf) Tupa.  Leo attended schools in Pisek and Orr, ND. Leo served in the US Army from 1952-54 and was honorably discharged April 14, 1954.  While serving in the Korean War, Leo earned the National Defense Medal, Korean Service Medal with 3 Bronze Service Stars and a United Nations Service Medal. He worked for the City of Grand Forks in the Water Dept. from 1955-93, retiring May 1, 1993. Leo married Beverly A. Laurent in 1954.  He married Marilyn K. (Schafer) Anderson in 1965 and they resided in Grand Forks. He enjoyed traveling, playing cards, family and visiting with his many friends.  Leo was a member of the VFW Post #3817, American Legion #157 from East Grand Forks, MN, and the Grand Forks DAV Chapter 2.  He also served as the Gaming Manager for the VFW and was a member of the VFW Honor Guard. Leo is survived by his Fiancé, Darlene Mager of New Richmond, WI; children, Debra (Jim Bata) Tupa of Orr, ND, Jerry (Sherry) Tupa of Champlin, MN, step-children, Vicki (Lloyd) Odegard of Sparks, NV, Tammy (Mike) Johnson of Grand Forks, ND, Kristi (Randy) Sorlien of Grand Forks, Troy Anderson of MT; sisters, Evelyn Murphy of Pierre, SD; brother, Wilfred (Carol) Tupa of Grand Forks; 13 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn K. Tupa; daughter, Betty Lynn Tupa; son, Tad Tupa; sisters, Ann Kubousek, Francis Kowalski, Magdelen Gustafson, Irene Wiesnaut, and Adaline Vinyard. Funeral services will be Wednesday, February 17, 2016 at 10:30 AM in United Lutheran Church, 324 Chestnut St., Grand Forks. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 5 to 7 PM with a prayer service at 7PM in Amundson Funeral Home, 2975 South 42nd St., Grand Forks. Visitation will continue the hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in the Memorial Park South Cemetery, Grand Forks. Military honors will be presented by the N.D. Army National Guard Military Funeral Honors, East Grand Forks American Legion Post #157 & East Grand Forks Veterans of Foreign Wars Post # 3817, and Grand Forks DAV Chapt. #2.
