Larry Roland Holm

August 23, 1950 — February 19, 2016

Larry Roland Holm, age 65, of Grand Forks died Friday, February 19, 2016 at Villa St. Vincent in Crookston, MN after a two-year battle with brain cancer.  He was born on August 23, 1950, to Walter and Lorraine (Boucher) Holm at St. Francis Hospital in Crookston.  He attended school at St. Joseph’s Academy, later graduating from Crookston Central High School in 1968.  During those years he loved helping his uncles, the Boucher brothers, with their farming. Larry enlisted in the US Air Force on April 11, 1969 and later that year married Colleen Haggerty at Crookston.   He was stationed at Minot AFB; Hickam AFB in Hawaii; Grand Forks AFB and U-Tapao RTAFB in Thailand.  In March 1978 he separated from the active duty Air Force and enlisted in the ND Air National Guard.  He retired in February 1996 with the rank of Master Sergeant.  Whether he was enlisted or living the life of an ordinary citizen, Larry fully supported and always promoted the red, white and blue.  He was a very proud flag flying American whose favorite quote was “Without the U.S. military, there would be no United States.” On September 22, 1984 he married Jane Krogstad Rowland in Grand Forks.  At that time Larry worked as a fuel delivery driver for the Fisher Co-op.  He worked at several jobs before and after that until beginning his 22-year career at Strata Corporation where he retired from his safety and compliance position in March 2014. Larry was a Red Cross volunteer and helped during the Northwood tornado and in New Jersey after 9/11.  He was a member of several organizations which include VFW Post #3817 in EGF; EGF American Legion Post #157; Forx Amateur Ham Radio Club as KIOW; Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve program; Grand Forks Optimist Club; and North Dakota Geocaching Association.  He was a trained weather spotter and Skywarn attendee (the grandchildren called him “Mr. Doppler.”)  He also was a reader in church and in the past served on the University Lutheran Church Council as well as the Property Committee. Family, golfing, bike riding, dancing, geocaching, UND sports, history, Holm family genealogy and movies were all things he enjoyed. Larry is survived by his wife, Jane; son, Christopher Holm (US Army) of El Paso, TX; stepdaughter, Nicole Rowland Vaughn of Columbia, SC; stepson, Robert (Sarah) Rowland  of Claremont, CA; 3 grandchildren – Kendra Vaughn, Evan Vaughn and Alexander Rowland; two sisters, Vickie (Rand) Hughes and Julie (Jon) Duphorn; one aunt, Gladys Boucher. He is preceded in death by his parents, grandparents and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Funeral:  10:30 AM on Friday, February 26, 2016 at University Lutheran Church, 2122 University Avenue, Grand Forks, ND.  Visitation:  5:00 PM to 7:00 PM with a 7:00 PM prayer service on Thursday, February 25, 2016 at Amundson Funeral Home, 2975 S. 42nd St., Grand Forks, visitation will continue for one hour prior to the funeral service in the church.
