Melvin J. Halverson

Melvin J. Halverson, 91, Grand Forks, ND, died Thursday, March 31, 2016 in Altru Hospital, Grand Forks.   Melvin, the son of Effie Halverson was born April 7, 1924 on a farm in Ferry Township, Grand Forks County near Manvel, North Dakota.  He was raised in Ferry Township and graduated from Manvel High School in 1942.  He was drafted into military service and sent to Ft. Snelling, MN, but was sent home because the war had ended.  He married Gladys Hjelmstad on April 28, 1946.  Melvin began farming and was also employed at Pillsbury Co. as a boiler operator for 30 years until the plant closed in 1989.  He then worked taking care of the building and grounds until 1990 when RDO purchased it.  He was then employed by RDO for 10 years until he retired.  He enjoyed attending local dances where his favorite dance was the waltz.  Melvin is survived by a son, Melvin Halverson, Jr., Manvel, ND; daughters,  Elaine (Terry) Morrow, Maple Grove, MN, and Mary (Mike) Johnson,  East Grand Forks, MN, 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother, Effie; wife Gladys; daughter, Ila Mae Stewart; and a son, Allen Halverson.  Funeral Services:  10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 5, 2016 at University Lutheran Church, 2122 University Ave., Grand Forks.  Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. with a 7 p.m. Prayer Service Monday, April 4, 2016 at Amundson Funeral Home, 2975 S. 42nd St., Grand Forks.   Interment:  Memorial Park North Cemetery, Grand Forks. Memorials are preferred to Seizure Research or Heart Research at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota.
