Gerald "Jerry" Schmidt

July 5, 1946 — June 7, 2016

  Gerald L. Schmidt, 69 of Grand Forks, died Tuesday, June 7, 2016 peacefully at home surrounded by family.   Jerry was born July 5, 1946 in St. Paul MN to Warren and Marjorie (Loveday) Schmidt. He grew up in New Brighton, MN, graduating from Mounds View High School in 1964. He attended the Minneapolis Vocational school for carpet installation. In 1968, Jerry moved to Grand Forks, ND where he was self-employed, opening Indoor and Outdoor Carpet Installation Service.   On August 18, 1978 he married Betty Ann McMenamy in Watertown, SD. They lived in Grand Forks, where they raised their two children, Amanda and Derek.   He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, virtually any activity in the great outdoors and being with family and friends. He had a special place in his heart for his Labrador hunting dogs.   Jerry is survived by his wife, Betty; children: Amanda (Aarick Omlid), Thompson, ND; Derek (Jean), Grand Forks; Grandson, Grayden Lee Schmidt; Brother, Jeff (Jayne) Schmidt, Alexandria, MN; Sisters: Sheila (Val) Bruhn, East Grand Forks; Shelley (Keith) Bunkowske, Vergas, MN; Brother-in-laws: Jim (Connie) McMenamy, Ron (Geri) McMenamy, Neil (Pam) McMenamy - all of AZ, David McMenamy, Grand Forks; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.   He was preceded in death by an infant daughter; his Parents, Warren and Marjorie; Father and Mother-in-law, James and Myrtle McMenamy; Sister-in-law, Judy McMenamy, many aunts and uncles.   Funeral service will be Friday, June 10th at 11:00 a.m. at Augustana Lutheran Church, 520 University Avenue, Grand Forks. Visitation will be Thursday, June 9th from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Augustana, and one hour (10:00 to 11:00 a.m.) prior to service.
