ARLINE FLORENCE SHORT-SCHUBERT, 79 passed away in her sleep on June 11, 2016 at her home home in Grand Forks, North Dakota. Arline was born on September 19, 1936 in Raton, New Mexico to Jesse F. Short and Esther Helen MacDougall Short. Arline grew up in Raton, New Mexico. She moved to Seattle, Washington in 1952 and graduated from Ballard High School in Seattle, Washington in 1954. After high school she attended the University of Washington-Seattle, Colorado College and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, culminating in her earning her Baccalaureate Degree of Arts in English from the University of North Dakota. She went on to earn her Masters of Arts in English Communications from the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, North Dakota, and later a Juris Doctorate. She taught English for 18 years in East Grand Forks, Minnesota, Grafton High School in Grafton, North Dakota and the University of Minnesota-Crookston. She also worked as a Private Attorney for 18 years, during which time she also taught Business Law, as well as English at the University of North Dakota, and also worked as the attorney for the University of North Dakota for a short time. She was also as a former assistant attorney general of North Dakota. She worked for the Grand Forks School System as a substitute teacher up through the end of the school year in 2016. Arline married George William Schubert on May 5, 1956 . They were happily married, having celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this year. Over the years, Arline attended of Zion United Methodist Church and Wesley United Methodist Church in Grand Forks. She served as a Girl Scout leader, adviser to Rainbow Girls, taught Communication Skills at Girl's State at the University of North Dakota , served on the North Dakota Association for the Disabled Advisory Board, was a member and past-President of the Grand Forks School Board, served on the Senior Citizen's Center Board of Directors, was a member of the Red Hatters Club, and was a long time member of P.E.O. Chapter D . She was a constant bridge player and was a member of numerous clubs over the years. Arline was well published in the area of law. She was also an avid supporter of UND athletics, particularly enjoying women's athletics. One of her proudest accomplishments was to establish, with her husband, George, the Endowment for the UND Athletic Academic Center in 2009. Arline was preceded in death by her parents, Jesse F. Short and Esther Helen MacDougall-Short, and by her sister Wilma Belle Short-Haugan. Arline is survived by George William Schubert, her husband, residing in Grand Forks, North Dakota; her daughters Kathleen Jane Schubert-Hall of Madison, Wisconsin and Cheryl Lynn Schubert-Madsen of Junction City, Kansas; and by her sister, Janice Short-Smith of Lynwood, Washington. Arline also had 8 grandchildren, Donald Alan Hall, Christopher Lee Hall, Angella Lynn Hall, Mark Dwayne Madsen, Jr., Rebecca Ann Madsen, William Laurence Madsen, Daniel James Madsen and David Aaron Madsen; and 2 great-grandchildren, Abbigayle Mia Steden and Jack Thomas Hall. Memorial Services will be Thursday, July 21, 2016 at 6:30 PM in Wesley United Methodist Church of Grand Forks. Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 PM until 6:30 PM in the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Grand Forks Public Schools Foundation for Education.
