Gladys Sommerfeld

Gladys I. Sommerfeld, 78, Grand Forks, died Wednesday, August 10, 2016 at Northwood Deaconess Health Center, Northwood, North Dakota. Gladys Irene Joern, the firstborn child of Frank and Aletha (Hall) Joern  of Upham, North Dakota , was born on January 5, 1938 at Bottineau, North Dakota.   At age 5 she moved with her family to Crary, North Dakota.  She attended school at Southam, and Brocket, North Dakota and graduated from Lakota High School in 1956.  She married Gad Sommerfeld on July 28, 1956 at Lakota, North Dakota. She was employed by Woolworth’s, Golden Hour Restaurant, Miller’s Super Market, Eddy’s Bakery Office, North Dakota Public Health Office and Grand Forks County Social Services  until she retired. She enjoyed many hobbies, including cooking, baking, embroidery, knitting, sewing, dancing, playing Bingo, playing cards and attending the activities of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  Gladys enjoyed traveling with her husband Gad, taking many bus trips and a couple of cruises as well.    She was well known for her wedding cake decorating which she did for 49 years.  Gladys is survived by her husband, Gad, Grand Forks;  daughters,  Barb (Clint) Uhrich, Grand Forks, Peggy (Dale) Schulz, East Grand Forks, MN;  grandchildren, Jeremy (Angela) Uhrich,  Amber (Nick) Van Deusen,  Justin (Trista), Uhrich, Amanda  Dalzell (Travis Alme), and Brandon Dalzell (Kirsten Raylyn);  13 great-grandchildren;  sisters, Beatrice Schulz, Michigan, ND and Adeline Rupple (Gordon), Greeley, CO and many nieces.  She was preceded in death by her parents, and brothers, Earl and Loren.  Funeral Services:  will be  10:30 a.m. Monday, August 15, 2016 in Redeemer Lutheran Church, 815 N. 20th St., Grand Forks.  Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. Prayer Service Sunday in Amundson Funeral Home, 2975 S. 42nd St., and for one hour prior to the service in the church.  Interment will be in Memorial Park South Cemetery, Grand Forks.
