Catherine Nielsen

  Catherine R. “Cathy” Nielsen, 58, Grand Forks, ND, died Sunday, August 14, 2016 at home.   Cathy was born July 16, 1958 in Langdon, ND, the daughter of Shirley and Phyllis (Newnam) Sand.  She attended school in Langdon until 7th grade when she moved with her family to Grand Forks. She graduated from Grand Forks Red River High School and later from Mayville State with a degree in Early Child Development.   Cathy worked at Valley Memorial Home on Almonte Ave.  She married Peter Nielsen on August 25, 1983 in Grand Forks. She worked at the Good Samaritan Nursing Center in East Grand Forks, MN until 1991 when she opened a daycare which she operated in her home.   In 1997 Cathy began attending school at Northland Technical College in East Grand Forks, MN. She graduated with a Secretary and Business Degree and began working for REM of North Dakota.   Cathy loved time at the lake, camping and going on walks.   Survivors include her husband, Peter, Grand Forks; son, Andrew Nielsen, Grand Forks; daughter, Cyndi (Zach Hill) Nielsen, Merino, CO; two grandchildren, Serenity Hill and Zayva Hill, (and one grandchild on the way); mother, Phyllis Sand, Grand Forks; brothers, Tom (Mary) Sand, Grand Forks, and Jim Sand, Maine; sister, Connie (Rudy) Bellomy, Grand Forks.   She was preceded in death by her father, Shirley Sand.   Memorial Services will be 10:00 AM Saturday, August 20, 2016 in Amundson Funeral Home of Grand Forks. Visitation will be for the hour before the service in the funeral home.
