John Scheffer

John W. Scheffer, 80, Grand Forks, died Thursday, August 18, 2016 at Villa St. Vincent Nursing Home, Crookston, Minnesota. John William Scheffer was born to John Fredrick and Mary Ellen (Murphy) Scheffer on September 13, 1935 at Minneapolis, Minnesota.  John attended school in Minneapolis, MN, Sioux Falls, SD, and Spokane, WA.  He served in the US Army and also served 20 years in the US Air Force during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He retired from military service in 1975.  John Scheffer and Betty Tofsley were united in marriage on August 22, 1975 at Augustana Lutheran Church in Grand Forks.  He was employed by the Grand Forks City Water Department for 25 years until he again retired.  John loved to read, work on puzzles, travel, and fish.  One of his favorite past times was going to movies with his children, and as the family grew, also the grandchildren.  John and Betty joined Immanuel Lutheran in 1980.  John was a very active church member, teaching Sunday school, serving various volunteer capacities, and regularly attending bible studies and church functions.   He loved his brothers and sisters in Christ.    John is survived by his wife Betty;  children, Jeffrey Scheffer (Sue), Auburn, WA, Kathy Earl, Sacramento, CA, Shonna Miller (Troy), Tacoma, WA, Monicka Elston (Russell), Spanaway, WA, Eric Scheffer (Jessica), Grand Forks, and Christopher Scheffer (Kayleigh), Grand Forks;  grandchildren, Lance, Sarah, Ashley, Jennifer, Hannah, Ethan, Emma, Ivy, Cora, Eli, Samuel.  He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Betty Huxtable. Funeral Services: will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, August 22, 2016 in Immanuel Lutheran Church, 1710 Cherry St., Grand Forks.  Visitation will be from   3 to 5 p.m. Sunday with a 5:00 p.m. Prayer Service in Amundson Funeral Home, 2975 S. 42nd St., Grand Forks and one hour prior to the service in the church.  Interment will be in Memorial Park South Cemetery, Grand Forks.    Memorials are preferred to Immanuel Christian Children’s Center.
