Susan Jane McLaughlin, 65, Grand Forks, ND, died October 31, 2016. Susan was born on January 26, 1951 in Grand Forks, ND, the daughter of John and Elaine McLaughlin. Susan grew up in Grand Forks, and graduated from Central High School in 1970. She resided with her parents for several years after high school, and came to live briefly with her sister in Columbia, MO before returning to Grand Forks. She was a resident of St. Anne’s Guest home for several years before moving to Woodside Village. Susan’s family members view her as a most courageous person with an indomitable spirit. Her family and friends were constantly amazed by her striving for independence, service to others, love of music, love of her church (Sharon Lutheran-- and particularly her church choir), love of animals, love of bike-riding, love of needlework and craft projects—and, she was a stellar scrabble player! Sue’s favorite hymn, “Just As I Am” says it all. As a daughter, Susan was there for her mother as she faced her own aging process. She spent most Sundays with her father and loved sharing Sunday sports programs, a pancake breakfast, and countless hours of companionship. She loved his sense of humor and enjoyed the stories he told about his life and their lives as a family. Susan loved traveling with various family members through the years and was always ready for adventures at the zoo or a museum, at a new and exciting restaurant, or just sitting with family members and sharing conversation and memories. As Susan grew older and wiser, one of her favorite television shows was “Little House on the Prairie.” She could quote various characters as they experienced daily life challenges. One of her favorite sayings from that program was: Remember me with smiles and laughter, For that’s the way I’ll remember you . . . If you can only remember me with tears Then don’t remember me at all. Sue was preceded in death by her brother, Terrence, and by her parents. She is survived and dearly loved by her sister Margaret (and Lydia), her brother and sister-in law, Jack and Mary, and by her nephew and wife, Kelly and Sweet.
