Gladys Joyce Ulland, 88, passed away peacefully early in the morning of Tuesday, January 17, 2017, at Valley Eldercare Center. Gladys was born February 3, 1928, in Devils Lake, ND, the daughter of John F. and Tena (Nelson) Anderson. She grew up on the family farm in Newbre Township three miles west of Brocket, ND, in Ramsey County. She was educated in Newbre School and graduated from Brocket High School in 1946. She attended Mayville State Teachers College and earned a two-year degree in education. She taught 1 year in Ayr, ND. She married Earl V. Ulland on Aug. 20, 1950 at Vaage Lutheran Church in Brocket. They lived in Mayville, Crookston and moved to Grand Forks in the fall of 1957. Gladys taught two years of 1st grade at Winship School in 1958-60. She then was a substitute teacher and in the fall of 1968 became the school food hostess (cook) at Winship. Gladys was a homemaker, den mother, and for years participated in a neighborhood whist card club. She was very active in the VFW Auxiliary, being a member for 55 years. She was particularly involved with citizenship. Gladys loved to fish and was a big fan of the MN Vikings, Twins, and all UND sports. They had season hockey tickets for many years. She is survived by her sons, Robert & Rodney, both of Grand Forks and a sister, Jeanette (Cyril) Anderson of Lakota, ND. Gladys is preceded in death by her parents; and husband, Earl. Funeral Service: 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 20, 2017 at University Lutheran Church 2122 University Ave. in Grand Forks. Visitation: One hour prior to the service in the church.
