Ron Shannon, 44, Rural Thompson, lost his battle with depression and became a victim of suicide on Monday, January 23, 2017. Ron was born June 4, 1972 in Grafton, the son of Kenneth and Bonnie (Greenwood) Shannon. He grew up and graduated from Grafton High School in 1991. Ron then attended classes at Bismarck State College and also took some electrical courses. He started working for the Grand Forks Parks District part time in 1993. He continued to work for the park district working his way up to Assistant Foreman of Parks. Ron married his high school sweetheart Heidi Weixel on July 12, 1996. They were blessed with their two children Derek and Dru, who were raised on a rural farmstead with horses. Ron’s greatest joy was to see his children succeed. He loved to spend time with his family, riding horses, and go kart racing with his son. His love for go kart racing came from helping and cheering for his son racing at the local track. He was a member of the Grand Forks Karting Association, and a member at Holmes United Methodist Church. Ron is survived by his wife Heidi, children; Derek and Dru Shannon, all of rural Thompson, parents; Kenneth and Bonnie Shannon, Grafton, sister Susan (James) Summers, Grafton, many uncles, aunts and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandparents George and Ann Shannon, Eldon and Frances Greenwood, and uncle Jim Greenwood. Memorial service will be Saturday, January 28, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in Holmes United Methodist Church, rural Thompson. Visitation will be held Friday, January 27, 2017 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. with a prayer service at 6:30 in Amundson Funeral Home, 2975 S. 42nd St., Grand Forks. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to a fund in his children’s names at Riverfork Federal Credit Union, Grand Forks, ND.
