Lois J. Kinney, 87, Manvel, North Dakota, died Tuesday, February 7, 2017 at home. Lois Jeanne Olsen, the daughter of Olmer and Sigrid (Sorum) Olsen was born September 13, 1929 at Williston, North Dakota. She lived at Froid, Montana until age 9 when her family moved to Manvel. She attended school at Manvel and graduated from Manvel High School. She later attended the University of North Dakota and graduated in the first graduating class from the UND School of Nursing in1950. She was locally employed at the Deaconess Hospital as an ob/gyn nurse. She was later employed by the Grand Forks county Social Services as a screening nurse for nursing home placement and also served on the child abuse team. She married Willard Kinney on November 17, 1951 in Grand Forks. They lived and farmed at Manvel. Lois was committed to service, sitting on the Grand Forks County Farm Bureau Board, and the State Women’s Committee for North Dakota Farm Bureau. She also served as organist at the Zion Congregation Church/United Church of Christ in Manvel for 35 years. Lois had many interests. She loved fishing, reading, gardening and animals. She enjoyed theater, music, singing, and sports, especially anything that her grandchildren and great grandchildren were involved in. She enjoyed travel and history, especially Native American history and she loved meeting and visiting with new people. One of Lois’s loves was her 15 years singing with the Sweet Adeline’s. She cherished the practices, performances and concerts and the wonderful friends she made with this organization. A particular highlight was their trip to Washington, D.C, to contribute to the dedication of the WWII monument. Lois is survived by her children, Jeffrey Kinney, Manvel, ND, Kristin Kinney, Albuquerque, New Mexico, David Kinney, Manvel, Jane (Rick) Beasley, East Grand Forks, MN, and John (Diane) Kinney, Manvel; grandchildren, Jennifer, Katie, Holly, Kristen, Jared, Molly, Joseph, and Joshua; great-grandchildren, Stetson, Austin, Brayden, Jackson, Blake, Avery, Bryer, Ronin, and Lennon; a sister, Marilyn (Roald) Mattson, Minot, ND; sister-in-law, Lu Bry, Grand Forks, ND. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Willard, a son, Jeffrey Scott, and a daughter, Beth, daughter-in-law, Camille Kinney. Services will be 1:00 p.m. Sunday, February 12, 2017 in St. Timothy’s Catholic Church, Manvel North Dakota. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. with a 5 p.m. Prayer Service Saturday, February 11, 2017 in Amundson Funeral Home, 2975 S. 42nd St., Grand Forks. Memorials are preferred to the Manvel Senior Center.
