Michael Mahoney

November 30, 1935 — March 3, 2017

Michael M. Mahoney, 81, Grand Forks passed away Friday, March 3, 2017.  Mike was born November 30, 1935 to James and Edith (Metcalf) Mahoney.  He grew up in Lakota, ND and attended a one room school house through eighth grade, graduating from Lakota High School in 1953.  Mike served as a forward observer for an artillery unit based in Germany with the US Army.  Upon his return home, he completed his BS in Civil Engineering from NDSU.  During his college summers he worked on the original Minuteman missile project.  After graduation he fulfilled two childhood dreams: building a skyscraper (1st National Bank-now Chase Tower) in Chicago, and getting his pilot’s license.  He also farmed his family land in Lakota for 25 years.  Mike was an active member in state and local Republican politics and was a founding member and past president of Landowners Association of North Dakota (LAND).  Mike always enjoyed a game of cribbage with his children, and each fall you could find him in Mott, North Dakota hunting pheasants.  Most recently he was a loyal member of the Perkin’s Breakfast Club with Diddy Quesnell, Father William Sherman and the late Jerry O’Connor, among others.  Mike is survived by his wife of 41 years Kathryn, and his four children, Sean, of  Los Angeles , Megan (Todd Holcomb),  of  Phoenix, Sara (Keith Marshall),   of Phoenix and Matthew,   of Minneapolis.  He is also survived by his granddaughter Meredith, of  Phoenix.  A memorial service will be held at 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 8, 2017 at Amundson Funeral Home, 2975 S. 42nd St., Grand Forks  with visitation one hour prior to the service in the funeral home.
