Capt (Ret) David James Bowen, 80, passed away Saturday morning at Altru Hospital from respiratory complications. David was born January 25, 1937, in Scranton, PA. His proud service in the US Air Force spanned four continents and 21 years, through the Vietnam and Cold Wars. He retired as a Captain in 1976 after serving as a missile silo commander at GFAFB. David continued his career with 28 years in academic affairs at the University of North Dakota and was the Assistant to the Dean of the College of Business when he retired again in 2006. Service to the community was extremely important to David. He was highly involved in the local Grand Forks chapter of the Lions Club International, volunteering his time and expertise and serving as District Governor for the 1998-1999 term. David is survived by his children; Jessica Deck (Raymond), Hannah Coblentz (Jay), Natalie Stjernen (André), Whitney Bowen, David Bowen, John Bowen (Deann) and Deanne Smith (Stan). He also leaves behind many grandchildren and great-grandchildren and Diane Bowen. He is preceded in death by his parents, George and Marian Bowen, his brothers, Lee, Henry, George and Russell Bowen, along with his daughter, Robin Bowen. Visitation and refreshments will be held at Amundson Funeral Home on Thursday, April 20th from 4-5:30, followed immediately by a prayer and military honors. He will be interred in a family plot at New Era Cemetery in Pennsylvania.
