Marion Smith

       Marion D. Smith, 81, Grand Forks, died Sunday, April 23, 2017 in Altru Hospital, Grand Forks surrounded by family.  Marion Delores Everson, the daughter of Alec and Sigrid (Hammertro) Everson was born in Grand Forks on January 26, 1936.  She moved with her family to Newfolden, Minnesota where she was raised and educated, graduating from Newfolden High School in 1954.  She attended UND Nursing School.  She was a tax consultant at H & R Block for 29 years.  Marion married Neal Smith on June 11, 1955 in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota.  They made their home in Grand Forks.  Neal died August 26, 1987.  She married Leonard Baenen in 2001 and he died in 2016.     Marion is survived by her children, Vicki Ronkowski, Grand Forks, Craig Smith, Orono, MN, and Lori (Larry) Tuntland, Reno, NV; six grandchildren, Jana (Nick) Larson, Justin Lunak, Michael (Ashley) Ronkowski, Phillip Smith (Leah Ehlert), Gregory Lunak, Katie Ronkowski (Jake Breidenbach); four great-grandchildren, Maddie, Owen, Hallie, and Grace; brother, Gordy (Diane) Everson, Aitkin, MN; sister, Karen (Ed) Goetz, Grand Forks;  sister-in-law, Millie Everson, Grand Forks;  and numerous nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Alec and Sigrid; husband, Neal; husband, Leonard; brothers, Arnold and Lawrence; sister, Shirley; sister-in-law, MaryPat; brother-in-law, Eddy; and mother-in-law, Frances.        Marion loved to volunteer for her church and would spend many hours visiting the elderly.  She enjoyed spending time at her lake home on Big Wolf Lake, playing Nertz with her long time lake friend, Ginny, planting her flower and vegetable garden, walking and spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.        Marion’s family would like to thank the nurses, doctors and staff at Altru Cancer Center for their love and support over the past year and a half. Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, April 29, 2017 in United Lutheran Church, 324 Chestnut St. Grand Forks.  Visitation will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. with a 7:30 p.m. prayer service Friday, April 28, 2017 at Amundson Funeral Home, 2975 S. 42nd St., Grand Forks.   Interment will be in Memorial Park North Cemetery, Grand Forks.
