Amy was born March 21, 1921 in Red River Township, near Kennedy Minnesota to Joe and Selma (Almquist) Langen. She was baptized and confirmed at Red River Lutheran Church, and grew up on the family farm. She attended the Dahlgren School and Kennedy High School. After graduating in 1939 she moved to Grand Forks and worked for Hugo’s Grocery. She married Howard Knudsvig of Buxton, ND on March 22, 1946. Together Howard and Amy operated Knudsvig Hardware and Funeral Home. They sold the funeral home in 1979, and closed the hardware store in 1986. In retirement they enjoyed spending time with kids and grandchildren, and time at their lake cottage on Strawberry Lake. Howard died in 1998. Amy moved to Grand Forks in 2005, and to Valley Eldercare in 2011. Amy was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Buxton. She taught Sunday school for many years, was active in ladies aid and other church activities. Amy was a Cub Scout den mother, active in PTA and Band Mothers, as well as many other community organizations and activities. She loved to knit and crochet, and made hundreds of afghans, sweaters, mittens, scarves and other things which are treasured by her family. She was never without a book to read, and after she lost her vision she was fond of talking books. Her flowers and house plants were a great source of pride to her. You never saw Amy without lots of jewelry and colorful clothes. She always wanted to look nice. A memory of Amy for many will be the pictures she took, and the many sayings, quotes and bits of “guidance” she posted in the hardware store. Amy is survived by her children; Craig (Renae), Grand Forks; Rebecca Brooks, Mayville, ND; and Loretta (Dave) Upgren, Bismarck, ND; 6 grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews.
