Warren C. Loberg, 93, Grand Forks, died Saturday, June 10, 2017, in his home. Warren Courtney Loberg, the son of John J. and Bernice (Severson) Loberg was born April 28, 1924 in Wahpeton, ND. He and his seven brothers and sisters attended school in Wahpeton. At 15 he worked for the CCC (Civilian Conservation Core) in Medora, ND. When he was 16, he enlisted in the Army National Guard. At age 17 he graduated early from Wahpeton High School, to enlist in the Army. Warren entered the service through Fort Snelling, MN. He was trained as a tank gunner, driver and rifleman at Camp Polk, Louisiana. He fought in World War II in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. He received a Purple Heart while part of the 113th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron. He met some of his best life-long friends during the war, who were like brothers. After the war, he attended Wahpeton State School of Science, studying Journalism, Printer’s English and History. In 1946, Warren enlisted as a corporal for a second tour of duty serving with the 91st Army Airways Communications Squadron Wing in Tokyo, Japan. Upon his return, he transferred to Valley City State Teachers college and in 1950, received a bachelors degree in Education and History, with a minor in Psychology. This is also where he met another VCSU student who was kind enough to share her locker with Warren. Her name was Dolores (Lorrie) Morris and she later became his wife and best friend. Warren and Dolores were married June 11,1950 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Valley City. Since both were high school teachers they began their teaching careers together in Svea, ND, Murdock, MN, and later in Sheyenne, ND. Warren and Dolores spent their summers attending graduate school at the University of North Dakota where Warren received his Masters degree in School Administration. The Lobergs later moved to Drayton ND where Warren was Superintendent of the Drayton Public Schools. In 1959, Warren was recruited to become the assistant principal at Central High School in Grand Forks. He later served as the Business Manager and eventually the principal at South Jr. High School in Grand Forks. He retired from the district in 1989. Under his leadership, South Jr. was the first Jr. High School in North Dakota to be an accredited North Central school. Warren was a dedicated educator who touched the lives of many. In 1992 Warren was awarded a Certificate of Merit from VCSC for his accomplishments as an educational leader. Warren and Dolores were members of Calvary Lutheran Church since 1959. They made many life-long friends at Calvary. He loved his family and always expressed his pride for the accomplishments of his wife, daughters and grandchildren. He was their biggest fan! He could often be found working in the garage, reading, gardening listening to classic country western music or following UND sports. He was knowledgeable of many topics and always enjoyed learning something new. He loved to laugh and make others smile. He will be dearly missed. Warren is survived by daughters, Nancy (Mark) Reinhiller, Beaumont, CA and Sara Loberg, Grand Forks, a grand daughter: Emily (Michael) Palmer, Batavia, IL; a grandson, Casey (Wendy) Kress, Tooele, UT, great grandchildren; Jackson Palmer, Eisley Palmer, Harrison Kress and Baby Palmer (due in October),Sisters: Virginia Benson, Janet Catalano; a sister-in-law, Gloria Loberg, and many nieces and nephews. He was proceeded in death by Dolores, his wife of 63 years (she passed away November, 2013); brothers: Chester, Durwerd, Durwin and John.; a sister, Colleen; brothers in law, Ken (Ruth Helen) Morris and Harold (Delora) Morris. The family would like to thank the dedicated staff from Comfort Keepers, Altru Hospice and Altru meals for their service and loving care. Warren made many dear friends who were amazing caregivers. He loved visiting with them, sharing a story or offering advice. The family suggests memorials to the Sunshine Hospitality Home, Grand Forks, Calvary Lutheran Church or Altru Hospice. Memorial Service with military honors- 11:00 AM Thursday, June 15, Calvary Lutheran Church 1405 S. 9th St, Grand Forks, ND, with visitation an hour before the service.
