Hartley Wayne BrownHartley Wayne Brown, 85, of Grand Forks, ND passed away suddenly on July 14, 2017. Hartley, son of Mildred (Guss) and Raymond Brown, was born March 25, 1932 in Fargo, ND. He grew up in Fullerton, ND and graduated from Fullerton High School. Hartley was a morse code/radioman in the US Navy before being medically discharged. After serving his country, he graduated from the University of North Dakota. He received his Masters degree from VanderCook School of Music. He married Sally (Lamport) on September 1, 1955 in Hecla, SD. They had 4 children: Wendell, Jolene, Brad, and Melanie.They made their home in Grand Forks where Hartley taught band at Valley Junior High and several elementary schools for 35 years. He was a very patient, kind and compassionate teacher. Hartley played clarinet and saxophone in many bands in the area including: Jimand the J Notes, Dick King’s Classic Swing Band, Elks Band, American Legion Band, Grand Forks Symphony, City Band, 51 years in the Shrine Circus Band and most recently the Second Wind Band. He also was a member of the Varsity Bards while attending UND.Hartley loved his time at the lake, traveling, listening to, playing and arranging music, attending his children’s and grandchildren’s many music and sporting events. He especially loved baseball, mostly his Minnesota Twins.Hartley is survived by his wife of 61 years, Sally, children: Jolene (Dan) Mikkelson, Brad, Melanie (Don) Craig and his grandchildren Tommy Mikkelson, Lauren Craig and Rachel Craig. He is also survived by his sisters Marilyn Folkestad of Oakes, ND, Karen (Frank) Bell of Englewood, OH and brother Bill (Terrie) Brown of Staples, MN. He was preceded in death by his son Wendell Wayne Brown, brother-in-law Jerry Folkestad and his parents Ray and Mildred Brown.The funeral service for Hartley will be held at 1:30 Thursday, July 20, 2017 at Calvary Lutheran Church in Grand Forks, ND. A time for coffee and sharing memories of Hartley will follow the service in the church fellowship hall. Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.Memorials may be directed to UND Pride of the North Marching Band, Calvary Lutheran Church Music Fund or a charity of your choice.Condolences and memories can be shared at www.amundsonfuneralhome.com
