JOSEPHINE MCCARTY     Josephine McCarty, 95, died in her sleep on Monday Morning at her home in Grand Forks, ND. She was a beloved Mother, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother who was deeply loved by all. She was Registered Nurse at Providence/St. Margaret Hospital for over 27 years. Born in rural Kansas in 1921, Josie and her family moved to the small town of Moline, Kansas when she was four. Graduating from Moline High School in 1939, Jo moved to Kansas City to stay with her sister, Ione. It was during this period that she decided to become a nurse. While in nursing school she met Floyd Kauffman, who she married in 1943, the day after graduation. Soon they moved to Norfolk, Virginia, where Floyd was stationed in the Navy. After the war, Jo stayed at home to tend her growing family until 1956 when she followed her passion for nursing. She reentered the workforce and became head nurse at Providence/St. Margaret Hospital. She gained a reputation for tireless dedication, cheerful disposition and “can-do” attitude. Floyd passed away in 1972 after 29 years of marriage. Her second husband, Arthur McCarty, passed away after only three years of marriage. During her life, Jo lived in Kansas City, Kansas; Colorado Springs, Colorado; Valley City, ND and Grand Forks, ND, so she could be close to her family. She loved each of her grandchildren and great grandchildren and enjoyed entertaining them with countless trips to the zoo, games, activities, and surprises. Her hobbies and interests included reading, knitting, needle-point, ceramics, working jigsaw puzzles, and playing any type of card game. Jo also enjoyed travelling and took many overseas trips and cruises. She loved meeting new people and making friends wherever she went. Jo was preceded in death by her mother, father, sister, two husbands: Floyd Kauffman and Arthur McCarty, as well as daughters Suzanne Macan and Patricia Schooley and her great-grandson Cody Brunner. The loved ones she left behind include her son, Robert Kauffman (Janet); son-in-law Joseph Macan; grand-children Robert “Scot” Kauffman, Russell Kauffman (Misti), Randall Macan, Kevin Macan (Debra), Brett Macan, Aaron Macan (Shona), Brian Schooley (Tammy), Bridgette Brunner (Donny) and Brad Schooley; great-grandchildren Joseph Kauffman, Noah Kauffman, Jonah Kauffman, Rebekah Kauffman, Micah Kauffman, Elijah Kauffman, Nehemiah Kauffman, Alexis Macan, Aubrey Macan, Hayley Macan, Candace Macan, Jeb Brunner, Rachael Dye, Megan Stephens, Christina Bruner, Caroline Peters, Tabitha Lash-Horne…as well as numerous great-great grandchildren. Jo wrote this wish for the future: “Good luck to the future. May there be “peace worldwide.” Safety for all wherever they may be. Have the feeling of Christmas every day!!”
