Helen Maxine Halle, 95, Grand Forks, passed away Thursday, December 28, 2017, at Woodside Village, Valley 4000 Square. Helen was born November 28, 1922 at home on the farm in Byron Township, North Dakota. Her parents were Alice (Thody) and Peter Moffatt. She attended school at nearby Hannah, graduating from high school in 1941. She enrolled that fall at the Valley City School of Nursing. During the last 6 months of her training she joined the Cadet Nurse Corps, established by congress in 1943 to ensure there were enough nurses to care for citizens at home and abroad during WWII. She graduated from nurse’s training in the fall of 1944 and in April of 1945 went to Fort Snelling to enlist in the Army Nurse Corps. After basic training she was sent to Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, where she served as a Second Lieutenant. Following her time in the service, she returned to Valley City, then worked in Ypsilanti, Michigan. She returned to North Dakota to serve as operating room supervisor at Mercy Hospital in Devils Lake until 1949, when she went to work for Dr. Mahoney. She met Earl Halle that year and they were married in 1950. While living in Devils Lake, the couple had three children, Rick, Karen, and Nancy. The family moved to Grand Forks the spring of 1956. Helen worked part time at the Deaconess Hospital until 1960, when she was hired as the Assistant Director of Nursing at Valley Memorial Home, Almonte. She was part of the Valley family for over 22 years, taking a break when Scott was born in 1963 and when the family moved to Bottineau for a short time in 1966. Helen retired in 1985 to care for Earl. He died February 12, 1986. She remained in her home on Polk Street until it was lost in the flood of 1997. She later made many wonderful friends at Parkview Terrace, serving for years as resident “Nurse”. Helen is survived by her sons Rick (Fran) and Scott (Brenda) Halle, daughters Karen (Carl) Bensen and Nancy (Jerry) Larson, 9 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren with 2 more great grandchildren on the way. She is also survived by her sister, Norma Feay, Bemidji, Minnesota. We would like to thank the “Prairieview Neighborhood” Staff at Valley Memorial for the wonderful care she received the last few weeks while she was part of your family. Funeral service will be held Tuesday, January 2, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Grand Forks. Visitation will be held 1 hour prior to the start of the service. Interment in Memorial Park North Cemetery in Grand Forks.
