Les Hutton

Leslie J. “Les” Hutton, 81, Manvel, ND, died Monday, January 15, 2018 at Valley Memorial Home Woodside Village, Grand Forks. Les was born November 25, 1936 in Grand Forks, ND, the son of Leslie and Catherine (Connelly) Hutton. He was raised and educated in Manvel, ND. Les married Ellen Gerszewski on November 20, 1956. They lived in Grand Forks where Les worked for the Western Fruit Railroad. They soon moved to Oslo, MN where Les was employed with the Schultz and Lindsey Construction Co. He worked for a Chevrolet dealer in Van Nuys, CA, then joined the U.S. Army National Guard for 6 years, serving out of Ft. Leonard wood, MO. In 1959 they returned to Oslo, MN where Les worked for Cenex and later for the Bud Johnson Potato house. He was employed for twelve years with the Pillsbury Company working his way up to Plant Maintenance Supervisor. He also farmed during that time.  Les later sold life insurance for Penn Life and was a maintenance supervisor for Simplot for a few years. Les was soon farming full time, concentrating mostly on edible beans. He founded the Turtle River Bean Co. which he owned and operated until selling the business in 2001. He served on the board for the Red River Bean Growers Association which includes his 2 years as President from 81-83. He also served on the board for the Manvel Oil Coop, the board for the Manvel Community Center and was a life member of the Manvel American Legion.  Les worked for C & F Foods and later for Halls GMC of Grand Forks until 2005. Survivors include his wife, Ellen, Manvel, ND; children, Jeff (Alicia) Hutton, Craig (Amy) Hutton, Mike (Kendra) Hutton and Laurie (Steve) Schumer; grandchildren, Abbie and Tanner (Carlie) Hutton, Kassie (James) Pike, Turner, Cotton and Clae Hutton, Luke, Nick (Samantha), Christopher, Barry, Logan and Ethan Hutton, Kole (Megan), Brody (Ashley), and Morgan Hutton, and Matthew, Joshua and Rachel Schumer; great grandchildren, Connor, Tessa and Evelyne Hutton and Aiden Johnson; sisters Bernadette Peterson, Grand Forks and Margaret Heider,  Aberdeen, SD; brothers, Chet Hutton, Gilbert AZ and Kenneth Hutton, East Grand Forks, MN. Les was preceded in death by his parents and by an infant sister, Susan. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 AM Friday, January 19, 2018 in St. Timothy’s Catholic Church of Manvel, ND. Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM with a 7:00 PM Prayer Service in the church. Visitation will continue for the hour before the Funeral Mass in the church. Burial will be in St. Timothy’s Catholic Cemetery at a later date.
