Shirley Tufte, 81, Grand Forks, formerly of Emerado, died Tuesday, March 6, 2018 at Valley Elder Care. Shirley was born in Pinewood, MN on December 5, 1936 to Sewell and Gustie (Schachtschneider) Nelson. She had 5 brothers and 2 sisters. Shirley moved to Brocket, ND where she attended school and graduated from Brocket High School. She was a good basketball player. She played guard in 6 on 6 basketball Shirley married Arnold Tufte in Pinewood, MN in 1955. They started their married life in Grand Forks. They moved to Northwood for a time, then the moved to Emerado where they lived for 27 years. They also lived in Hatton. Shirley worked with Arnold for many years as a Meat Department helper. She went to work at the Grand Forks Air Force Base, first working in the commissary then the accounting and finance department. She retired in 1998. She as a very loving mother, a good cook, a great seamstress. She could do anything. She was a painter, crafter, she enjoyed wood burning, and various other activities even helping Arnold with all of his projects. Most of all, she was the best mother and wife in the world. I love you to the moon and back! Shirley is survived by her loving husband Arnold, children: Candace (William) Fuehrer, Teresa (Dwaylon) Simms, daughter-in-law Brenda Tufte, grandchildren: Brandi Fuehrer, Hana (Alex) Cameron, Tyler Medeiros, Joshua Hall, Vanessa (Michael) Martinez, Jade Hall, Hunter Tufte, great grandchildren: Brody Melicher, Parker Cameron, Avelynn Medeiros, Nolan Martinez, brother Don (Joyce) Nelson, sister Jeanette Sellner. She was preceded in death by her parents, son Scott Tufte, brothers Harry, Sewell “Bud”, Dick, and “Stubby” Nelson, and her sister Hazel Rongstad. Memorial service will be held Saturday, March 10, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at Amundson Funeral Home. Visitation will be held 1 hour prior to the start of the service.
