Phyllis C. Power, 88, of Grand Forks, ND, passed away on Saturday, April 28, 2018 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND.Phyllis Clare Kjerstad was born to Dr. Conrad L. and Alma (Nelson) Kjerstad in Dickinson, ND on December 13, 1929. She grew up attending schools in Dickinson and Grand Forks. While at the University of North Dakota she sang in Madrigal groups and earned a baccalaureate degree in vocal performance and was Phi Beta Kappa. At the age of 12, she began singing in the church choir at United Lutheran. She would continue to sing in and direct church and community choirs during her life. Phyllis married James Alley Power on July 6, 1951. She accompanied him to Memphis, TN where he attended Southern College of Optometry and she taught in the public schools. They moved to Beulah, ND where they would make their home for 56 years. They enjoyed retirement in Mesa, AZ and moved to Grand Forks in 2005. They developed many precious friendships throughout their lives. Phyllis was a member of the ALC/ELCA and served at local, synod and national levels of the church. She is survived by her husband, her children: Paula (Thomas) Berg of Rapid City, SD, Kathryn (Carlos) Sampedro of Buenos Aires, Argentina, Elizabeth (Bruce) Hawkinson of St. Peter, MN, and Holly (Scott) Bommersbach of Grand Forks, ND and 9 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Muriel Mooney and Elaine Flannery.
