FRED G. STEWART Fred G. Stewart, age 89 of Grand Forks, died on Tuesday, May 8, 2018 at his home. A memorial service will be held on Thursday May 17, 2018 at 3:00 P.M. at the Amundson Funeral Home in Grand Forks. Visitation will be one hour before service time. Burial will be in the Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, SD. Fred Stewart, a son of Gordon and Ethel (Graham) Stewart, was born on January 24, 1929 at Sioux Falls, SD. He was raised and educated in the Sioux Falls area graduating from Washington High School in 1947. After graduation he attended college in Santa Rosa, CA. On August 2, 1948 Fred enlisted in the US Navy and was honorably discharged on August 1, 1952. He then attended college at the University of Arizona and in 1952 moved to Grand Forks and enrolled at UND. On June 7, 1954 he married Virginia Brett. In 1955 Fred graduated from UND with a Bachelor of Science in Commerce. They moved to Fargo where he worked for Northwestern Bell. In 1960 they returned to Grand Forks where he worked for the First National Bank as controller. In March of 1967 he received his CPA Certificate. Fred continued to work at the bank until his retirement in 1992. He was a member of First Methodist Church in Sioux Falls, SD, after moving to Grand Forks became a member of Zion United Methodist Church. Fred was very active within the church becoming the treasurer. He was a member of the Grand Forks Masonic Lodge Acacia #4. Fred was also a member of the Scottish Rite, York Rite and KEM Shrine. Fred was on the board of the Grand Forks Red Cross and a volunteer. He is survived by his wife Virginia at home; son, Jim Stewart of Rapid City, SD; daughters, Judy (Ron) Zejdlik of Allen, TX and Elaine (Michael) Matthew of Grand Forks; grandsons, Keith (Liz) Zejdlik, Josh (Fenny) Zejdlik, Nick Zejdlik and Walker Matthew; a great-granddaughter, Elara Zejdlik. Fred is preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Bill. In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials to the Altru Hospice and the Circle of Friend Humane Society.
